The Jazz Make a Panic Trade and Send Deron Williams to the Nets

The Utah Jazz traded Deron Williams to the New Jersey Nets for Derrick Favors, Devin Harris, two first round draft picks, and $3 million.

Obviously, the $3 million is meaningless to Nets owner, Mikhail Prokhorov. $3 million is the maximum allowed, and he might as well throw it in to all of his deals. Too bad Prokhorov wasn't around when Phoenix loved to sell all of their first round draft picks. He would have thrown down $300 million and bought a lifetime of first rounders.

The first rounders in this trade are the Nets 2011 unprotected pick (the Jazz will get it no matter where the Nets draft) and the Warriors 2012 protected pick (top 7 protected in 2012 and 2013 and top 6 protected in 2014, Jazz will get Warriors 2014 and 2016 second round pick).

The trade was definitely worth it for the Nets. They can try to build a few more pieces around Deron Williams before his contract is up for an extension in July 2011. He can't opt out until the summer of 2012, so the Nets will have time to build around him.

The Jazz must have felt that Williams was a lock to go, otherwise this was a huge mistake. Williams is a top 5 PG, and unlike his 2005 draft counterpart Chris Paul, he's healthier and is built for a long NBA career. There are a few questions about Chris Paul having permanent knee issues. It will be a while before the Jazz can find another top 5 PG. The Jazz have no idea what the new CBA will be, and maybe it would be easier to keep Williams with something like a franchise tag.

In the new CBA talks, teams like Denver, Cleveland, Toronto and Utah will complain about the difficulty keeping players in cities not traditionally preferred by NBA free agents. They need to figure out what San Antonio puts in the water to keep their top players there.
